There is lots happening to Camp Wildman with assistance from our brand new management team. We will be keeping this page up to date so that Scouters, Former Scouters and interested parents can see if there are projects happening with which they would like to get involved. Many of the projects in the following list have been instrumented by individuals that have a interest in improving and enhancing the camping experience for the youth that use the camp. If you have an idea please forward it to the Camp Wildman Management team ideas@campwildman.org. Once the Camp Wildman Team approves your idea, we'll even help get it started.
April 24, 2004 Work
Weekend We would like to see as many people at this weekend as possible, especially those who haven't participated in them before. There will be a major list of jobs and we need plenty of people and equipment. We will post the exact time that we will be starting soon, but I expect we will start early Saturday Morning and end Sunday Noon. The major work will be done Saturday. We are not sure if volunteers that stay overnight will be able to use the cabins so until this is decided, please be prepared to stay out doors. Please watch this site for changes in these details. A sample of some of the jobs will be: The Creek Meals Camping PLEASE ....RSVP Please contact Linda
Murray (322 -5067) or Willy
with the names of the people that we can expect, any equipment they can
bring, and how she can contact you. We have a plan in the works to move this cabin to the sites at the back near the Beaver pond. This is so that the Senior Sections will have opportunity to use the cabin while camping in an environment which is more suited to Scout, Venturer and Rover sections. The cabin will be "striped" of all it's luxuries (electricity etc) and only bunks and a heating device will remain. This project has 3 phases. Phase one, already started, is the preparation of the land and a setting of the floating foundation that the cabin will rest on. Phase 2, will happen over two weekends. On November 1&2 2003 the deck will be removed and most of the insides pulled out. On Nov 15-16 2003 the cabin will be moved to its new location. Phase 3 will be put on a new roof and deck the outside of the cabin. If you are interested and feel you can help with a portion of this project please contact ideas@campwildman.org and you will be contacted by a member of the team with more information.
Development of Theme program areas The reports from the general Scouting Membership is that they would like to see program areas, for all section, to camp in or to visit on the grounds of Camp Wildman. We introduced the obstacle course several years ago. This has created a extra activity that most groups use while at Camp Wildman. We are currently looking for suggestions for program areas that take full advantage of what is already on site or things we can build. Other ideas we've heard is pioneering area, some tree recognition and a star sighting area. Board material, rough cut was set back at the Beaver Pond area for the construction of perhaps another adirondacks or camping platforms, any ideas scouters? Please contact us at program.ideas@campwildman.org to offer your help on these projects. We would love you to come out and and give us a hand. We are very pleased about the development of "section" relevant program areas. We are currently working on a Cub site which will have a council rock, totem for opening and closings, small campfire area (group size), adirondacks and enough room for a outdoor kitchen and tent setup area. This has been planned for the Kaweechelchen site just down the road from the Cahiague Cabin (big cabin). Contact us at ideas@campwildman.org and a member of the team will be on contact with you with more information. We would like to invite each of the senior sections to develop a group site in the area of the beaver pond. Imagine! You're Scout Troop having there very own camp site at Camp Wildman. Several years ago, many of the older groups in the area had developed their own group camp site. Some of them can still be noticed on walks throw that area, but have not been maintained. Our challenge is to have a group come in, pick an area and develop it with their group's talents and interests in mind. As you visit it year after year you can keep it maintained or change it, as the youth in your Troop change. Contact us early to reserve your space and talk to us about your site. Each site will be a little different. You will be able to walk about and see what other groups are doing. Any group in the Shining Waters Council can set up a site. We just ask that you give a plan to identify your group's area with the Management team and visit or camp at your site enough to help keep is well maintained. Contact ideas@campwildman.org. We would like to build a program area for Beavers. Our proposed site is the area by the the Toanche Cabin (Cabin by the Creek). We don't have enough ideas yet but we would like to start soon. Beaver Leaders contact us with your suggestions at ideas@campwildman.org .
When speaking to groups at the camp, many of them like this area so they can get out of the rain or bright sun and tell stories or just run an activity. We feel the need is there to have this area a little bigger. The Camp Wildman Team is looking for someone to plan what we need and we will get the manpower and the supplies together to demolish and rebuild this well used area. Contact ideas@campwildman.org and a member of this team will give you more information.
Many groups are starting to use the new BBQ in the pavilion. It is a charcoal BBQ which can be used by a very large group or just a few people! It is a great idea but still needs some improvements. We have ideas what to do with it and feel it should be finished before the new pavilion is constructed. We are looking for manpower to help it get finish. It still needs a deck, especially around the cooking area (to stand on), and a grill. We are planning to finish it up on the 1&2 November 2003 work weekend for groups coming to use it in the fall. Contact ideas@campwildman.org and a member of this team will contact you with more information.
Obstacle course maintenance and rebuilding For many years we have had numerous people in to help with the obstacle course and we really appreciate it! We are hoping for some engineering people to come and see if they have any suggestions on what we can do with the swing bridge. Maybe with a few heads together we can rebuild this fun spot and swing again. Contact ideas@campwildman.org and a member of the team will contact you with more information.
Marketing video and photographs We are developing a video and brochure for Camp Wildman. We are also developing a photograph area on this web site. We will be displaying photos of our projects during all stages. Be sure to check for the "before" and "after" shots. Have any picture we can use? Please contact us at promotion@campwildman.org.
Work commenced on the educational area which is being put together just before you turn the corner and enter the Beaver Pond\ area. The land has been cleared now the next step is to build the benches rather than have the youth sitting on the ground. ideas@campwildman.org
Work also started on the new campfire circle which now will be larger to reflect the fact that it is now a regional site . Certain features will be added to that site news of which will be released later. These features will be of special interest to "camp fire chiefs".
